Not getting your car insured before an MOT does not violate any laws. However, many insurance companies void the policy if you don’t have a valid MOT.Except for SORN’d cars, every car must hold updated insurance.
With computerised motorway camera systems, the police can check MOT details of all vehicles in DVSA’s database. If the car does not have a valid MOT the police are alerted. There are ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras purposely for the detection of cars that are at high speed. The system is also able to give prompts to the police about the location of vehicles that are connected to unlawful activities

To drive abroad, you are expected to hold a valid MOT in the same way as in the UK. The only acceptable place to MOT is in the UK. Make sure your MOT is updated before you go abroad if you intend to travel. It is not lawful even abroad to drive without an MOT certificate or road tax. You can be fined for breaking this law and have your vehicle shipped back for testing

You are guaranteed a pass on your MOT if your spare wheels are of the same construction as your regular ones. The MOT test seeks to check the wheels and tyres fitted to the car. Your spare tyre may or may not be tested. In situations where spare tyres and wheels have different construction from the regular ones, you may be given an advisory warning. A space saver wheel may contribute to the failure of your MOT test. The wheels and tyres on each axle must be of the same size. Usually, space saver wheels and tyres are smaller than the regular ones
The tests carried out during an MOT ensures that your vehicle meets the required road safety and environmental safety standards thus making your vehicle roadworthy. The MOT test is NOT a replacement for servicing your vehicle, since it does not extend to advanced mechanical servicing works.
Every vehicle driven on the road must have an MOT test by the third year of its registration. If it has been SORN, then it must be done the next year of its last MOT. It is mandatory to renew your MOT before its expiry date. This date can be seen on the existing MOT certificate. Renewing your MOT earlier(1 month) before expiry will give you up to 13 months MOT.

To ensure that your vehicle is roadworthy, the MOT test inspects road and environmental safety items such as your vehicle’s lights, brakes, suspension, structure, component security, tyres and emissions if they meet the test requirements. The law does not permit any MOT tester to remove any items or covers from the vehicle.
Beware, the MOT test is an instantaneous test that does not guarantee the safety of the car but only its working condition as at the time the test is taken. These working conditions have been set by law as minimum requirements for every vehicle. Regular service should be the option if you want to ensure that your vehicle is mechanically sound. Servicing helps to discover potential faults that an MOT test can not reveal.
